The announcement that Bob Duffy will now be running for state office has thrown the Mayoral Control Debate into question. Sometimes change presents opportunity. In this case, it may de-personalize the political choices. Bob Duffy has been an immensely popular leader and a passionate spokesman for school reform. Critics of mayoral control have pointed out that other mayors may have less capacity to make systemic reform in education.

Greetings 19th Warders!
Leadership
WOW! What a difference a month can make, eh? Last time we spoke the mayor was still the mayor and now he is a candidate to be one heartbeat away from the Governorship! Although this is great news for Mayor Duffy, Rochester and the upstate region, the bigger question is what does it mean for the future of our city? From my humble perspective, the next mayor needs to do and be the following type of individual: focus on poverty, continue with economic development of downtown Rochester and beyond, focus on jobs, be very familiar with all neighborhood needs, be a unifier, be open to new ideas, be creative and be independent, amongst other things. These are some interesting times we're living in. I truly believe that Rochester will rise up and respond to the challenge!

Communications is an essential element in the continuing success of the 19th Ward Community Association. It is increasingly important to find ways to get our voices heard in the neighborhood and in the larger community. The Association has decided to form a Communications Committee to shepherd this important task.
The tasks of the committee will be to:
- Secure articles that tell the story of the community for Update 19
- Assist in the production of the monthly newsletter
- Maximize the usefulness of the Association website
- Advise the Association on other communications opportunities
- Develop contacts and connections with local media.
Anyone who is interested in serving on this working committee is encouraged to contact the Association office, 328-6571.
